Did not see a post for tonight and this is a question I have. What does this mean to you?
Isaiah 5:20

New International Version (©1984)
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
New Living Translation (©2007)
What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.

English Standard Version (©2001)
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

Holman Christian Standard Bible (©2009)
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

International Standard Version (©2012)
"How terrible it will be for those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, who substitute what is bitter for what is sweet and what is sweet for what is bitter!"

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

You are so sweet. I didn't see it either! Great question on the fly. In the Hebrew version, it translates as:

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that change darkness into light, and light into darkness; that change bitter into sweet, and sweet into bitter!

Are we not living in such times?

Here is an example that God has revealed to me in my prayers on the scripture. Evil today seems to be bold and happening often. Is God bringing evil into the light for all to see when it was hidden in the darkness and we did not see. That is what I call a miracle of God. I know I have set idly by and let things pass and did not speak out but evil is so pronounced that I can no long sit silent and must speak out. Is that what this verse means.? Would love to hear your comments.

Maggie, I think the passage is about humans twisting and manipulating right and wrong, good and bad, light and dark, sweet and bitter are the metaphors. To me, it's all about values that have moved far away from God. And the "woe unto them" - well, ultimately, we all answer to God.

Evil and bitter and darkness are always there but like in a dystopian sci-fi novel bad, manipulative, controlling people twist meaning into madness. The concern is always in fiction and reality when they succeed and the people cannot see the forest for the trees.

Welcome Barbara and OTBM. Thanks OTBM for sharing the Jewish version which appears to be the same in most of the scriptures. This came up today on a post with Lisa where she was talking about Anonyhmous spelling looks wrong but I think you know what I am talking about. They were putting down the chuch that protests at funerals but Lisa felt their intentions were not good. I listened to the YouTube and felt as Lisa did.

In our Bible study a few weeks ago this was refered to as the war between Satan and God. Satan tells that evil is Good.

The next section of scripture Isaiah 5:21-26 continues to explain how this evil is about turning away from God:

Maggie, thank you, I entirely forgot this was wednesday! great question...it seems to me this is about the church.....it is totally off base...immersed in hellenistic thought and culture. Not on God's calendar, not celebrating the feasts...caught up in pagan worship of christmas trees and easter bunnies. Churches fighting among themselves and arguing about all manner of things instead of worshiping together, sharing experiences and getting filled with the Holy Ghost!

Barbara, and in our pop-culture language remember when Michael Jackson sang the song "Bad"? Bad is a slang term for good. We are in that place, no?

Maggie, I heard about this and am not surprised by anything anymore. Those who speak with forked tongues usually have slippery tongues and the weak fall prey to it.

Good point, Dawn and true in a pagan-esque society.

I also think there was a part in the novel "1984" where the people have to chant something like this. At this time I really wish I had recovered all my memory lost to Chemo Brain I could go to the right passage.

I heard on one of the talk show hosts that someone mentioned that the shooter of the recent school incident may have thought he was saving the children from this so called end of the world on friday. Being mentally ill it is hard to know his thoughts and he did not stick around for anyone to ask. That would be a perfect example for this scripture. Far out but the thinking today is far out. I also feel it is the way deception enters in.

Barbara, lucky for you OTBK read "1984" recently and yes, "Ignorance is Strength," "Good is Bad," "Bad is Good," and 2+2=5.

1 year 7 months ago

The pundits can go on and on forever but we'll never truly know what was going on in the shooter's mind. When a person is mentally ill, we all make a good assumption that (s)/he is not in his/her right mind but what is disconcerting is that the mindset of society is out of whack and people's perceptions shift in the oddest and dare I say, unstablest of ways. Doesn't take much of a "nudge" does it?

I am always reminded of "1984" when people talk of "Political Correctness" Thank you OTBM for nudging one of my Chemobrain dead cells into life.

I'll give you a truly strange example. From real life. And let's hope this is just a California example. This AM, I'm pulling out of my garage to take OTBK to his law class and I see what I believe to be a stray dog running all over my lawn. Then, I see a woman. I ask, "is this your dog?" She says yes. I ask why it's not on a leash and can she get him off my lawn. Don't even ask how tightly this woman was wound up because in one split second she was cursing me out like a sailor.

Maggie, I heard from Krisanne today, she would like to speak to your group...no one has contacted her yet...are you still interested?

Dawn, how the heck are you?

Barbara, when OTBK was reading the novel he kept running into say, Oh my God mom it sounds like our government. Freaky freaky.

Dawn I did not mean to step out of line but when i did not see the post and this verse was haunting me I thought I would just post it. You are so right. Over these 5000 years since God created the world, man has put his spin on it and soon the true meaning of God is lost. I feel that is what we must do get the true meaning for God, be the people He wants us to be and lead others to the truth. So gald you are here. Love and God Bless Maggie

monday I had an appointment with my eye specialist and several people were turned away and told Medicre did not cover their visits anyore! Whoa!

1 year 7 months ago

Yup. Over the past year, my doctors have mentioned that they won't take Medicare. Wait till they don't take HMOs and then PPOs. But in the spirit of Isaiah 5:20 and George Orwell, universal healthcare is good. Obama is the saviour. And what other scary things do you hear like I do coming out of people's mouths?

Not sorry I asked, Dawn just sad to hear this. Oh brother! Do you have time off from classes? Well, how will you and Sophie instead spend the time. Disappointing, I can feel it in your typing. Everything good and bad happens for a reason. Maybe something is waiting around the corner for you that will touch your heart. <3

Ooops. <3 on FB is a heart.
