1 House of Prayer - LAUS DEO

2/25/13 Nightly, National, Synchronized Prayer – Comfort in Suffering

February 25, 2013

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

An older man was sitting on his front porch. Next door, a little four year old boy looked at him and saw that he was sad. He crossed the lawn, climbed up the stairs and sat in the old man’s lap. The man held him for a long time. After a time, he came home and his mother asked him,

“What did you say to him?”

He answered, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.”

Sometimes we receive comfort from others and sometimes we are called to provide comfort. Each time our mothers “kissed our booboo’s,” someone brought us chicken soup when we were not feeling well, we held our own children, friends or parents to comfort them, we were doing God’s work. God’s lessons are passed on to us so we, in turn can pass them on to others. This act of sharing is transformational for the giver and the receiver.

It is important that we look for situations to be of service to others. People who need help don’t have a sign on their foreheads; in fact they are probably trying to camouflage their situation to “keep things under control.” All it takes is a little perception and time. If you are rushing around, you won’t see it. We often say “take time to smell the roses.” Well, how about “take time to study someone’s breathing; listen to the tone in their voice, the speed of their speech or the depth of their sigh?” An extra minute of observation and moments of listening can change your life and theirs.

This is beautiful Janette.

Thank you , Janette,
Every Lent, I ask God to assist me in honing my observance of the needs of others. I found that giving of myself to others in their need was much more effective in showing my respect for the Word of God than the usual Catholic tradition of giving up something as maybe that nightly glass of wine. Both take commitment, but I like my choice because someone else prospers from my actions.

Janette, thank you for this lovely post. As I study worship, I am learning that it is so much more than music. Service is an act of worship. What a beautiful story about the little boy and the older man. We can bless others simply by smiling at them, talking to them and just listening to them.

Debbie, thanks for moderating. It is good to be here with you.

Debbie, thanks for asking. It got worse before it got better and was in the ER again the other night with another severe allergic reaction. I had eaten chocolate again so I hope it's not that. I guess if you gotta go, it should be by chocolate. I will see the allergy doctor soon for testing but I haven't had a food allergy except for certain fish, so this is all new. I am not eating any more chocolate...for now!

Doing good! Bracing for another possible snow storm! We may get 6 inches or so they say...you know how that goes. Sometimes they worry us and it's not that bad! =)

Thank you Debbie for your usual excellent job, I appreciate you so much! Carol your post was indeed an excellent to give to the Lord. You are a blessing! Laurie, so sorry about the run to the ER - there is a cake Ruben makes that is called death by chocolate - please do NOT take this literally! I pray your doctor identifies the offending agent!
