I have worked within the construction industry continually since i was 17. In 25 yrs 2.5 of it i had gotten a job as a warranty field manager for, (at the time) one of the nations top 5 residential home builders in the US, Canada, Germany, Had smaller umbrella companies (investment & holdings) within it, Swallowed up probably by means of leveraged buy out...(remember that word leveraged buy out for later) But they treated their employees decent for over 54 years in business..What im trying top say for a brief moment in time, for me i had arrived..I wasn't making 6 figures but my bills where paid, i had brand new Mustang GT06, i had a really nice 02 Dyna Wide Glide, (that i really loved and miss dearly) and i had a lil savings started... The Capitalist and long time CEO retires after 2 of the 2.5 i worked there..New CEO Not A Capitalist..I mean he capitalized i'm very sure...He was of the Fascist style of ownership...This guy got in just as the economy took a shit..6 months prior to my lay off he came to our division which was top $ and property collector so the more $ Corporate threw back to purchase land etc..And we had lots..LOTS OF LOTS..Man stands b4 us and says "the economy has hit some rough waters and sales have taken a huge decline. but i'm not panicking just yet..LET ME TELL YEAH WHY!!!( insert weird laugh)" And whats the first thing comes to my mind? Fucking snake oil salesman..He said, "We are the company who buys out weaker competition builders when times get rough..See (our company name) Homes has planned for just this kind of emergency.. Your division might see a 2% or less reduction in staff right away." So we had 600 plus employees in our division alone so 2% i knew my job was safe, because they will take the cuts in marketing, or make a idiotic design change in 2 story dwellings like roll out floor joists on 24'' centers.."we will save 1 joist per house saving the company $1,000's in the long run....Structurally ? not an issue. But not installing thicker OSB had my end spending $1000's in floor squeaks and sagging under tile.(when ever hardy backer wasn't used) My Job was easy, My boss told us in the warranty dept.," We do the right thing. Look for a reason to say yes.. if we do whats right ppl are more likely to recommend or buy another (our name ) homes." And after a year i was moved to the Litigation prevention team. A new team of 3 men and 1 really expensive supervisor.. But i over saw and wrote PO's exceeding , (holds pinky to lip) ONE MILLION DOLLARS...Sorry i went all Austin Powers..New CEO said so i would say its safe to keep ur $ in (our name) Homes stock.'' We made through the recession of the early 90's and pro's dont see this as being that bad.." So i make the cut and 13 ppl are laid off our transferred (demoted) to another dept if applicable..but 13 got the ax..See i was aware (our name) Finance Corp was partaking in competing with the big banks, Freddie & fanny etc. (Capitalism right??) and lending Millions to families who in no way could afford it at interest and people where paying $700,000 for a house that lists for high 200,00 now...Why do we pay $700,000 for something they say is only worth 200,000? How does a basic automobile cost in excess of $10,000?? Because "the market " says it does?? (Right now Mussolini is rolling in his grave saying "I KNOW THE ANSWER" A month later 75 got the ax..But that would likely all we see in our division..2months later 182 including myself got the ban hammer..had enough saved to live over 2 yrs not cutting costs much..Keeping $ or spending it wisely is something i know 0% about..Just being honest..However i know when i'm getting fucked...and this same people are fucking you, your parents, sisters, brothers, your children, grand children, aunts uncles.Etc..Dictionary.com defines Fascism as
( sometimes initial capital letter ) a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism... Mussolini was quoted as saying.'It was named wrong, it should be called corporatism ..So i rebound, my friend who's at the time a 27yo wise ass who i worked with and supervised from 02 to 04 he started a Insurance content restoration comp in the height of this depression face it folks recession it is not..In my humble opinion we are far worse on a wider scale then the great depression.. Far worse..And it does well. Does well Didnt say managed well..i started 2 months after his first job.Him and his newly wed wife (who is my age 39 at the time) partners... They offered me a decent salary to do their furniture restoration for almost 3 yrs b4 shtf and it died they divorced...so twice this depression has tagged me..So i thought i need to try something new, and without dong my research enrolled in a for profit college owned by the Washington Post. (Good ol Donald Grham) CFR, Bildaberger, Lets just say "HE'S ONE OF THEM" You know when the whacky conspiracy theorist says "Thats Their Plan"? Whos, Their? Mr Grham would be considered on of Their..Now i realize the for profit college scam really well, am in debt $17,000 but i did finish top of my class and went to 1 interview and got a job...Funny thing, the big companies they no longer share their huge profits with the guy doing the work...So i am trapped in debt, employed by a company who has to have certified and insured employees. You Betcha i not only have school loans i have to pay yearly for my license and my own insurance..and i make $15.00 per hour IF I HAVE A CLIENT...Thats right if my daily wage is less then minimum wage then we get that....And i for one question the ethical or legality of the contract the members sign..
Now my new employer is owned by Roark Capital Partners, They specialize in leveraged buy outs..Just the name leveraged buy out says it all..no notice was given to the workers but we did have to sign a few more informed consent forms..Informed consent is something you all should familiarize yourselves with...Here's my point, this once was a great nation, a constitutional republic to be exact..Today we are a corporate Fascist nation, ruled by corporations. They pick our CEO's ,presidents, congressman, senete..Here let this guy explain it
.

Still not convinced? Hey a new strip mall is going in. What stores will be there? Subway, Verizon wireless, panda express, coldstone, walmart, A jack in the box, a conoco gas station with a circle K inside? Or any other combination. I live in Calif where it is almost a crime to open your own ma and pa store. And if they do open they are squashed by the huge corporations. This is the goal for the whole nation. Fast food, GMO's, fluoride in your water. Contain and control...With all do respect to Texas and it's people, i must ask that Texans bite their tongue before they blast off, "NOT IN TEXAS".. May i remind you of the presidents your state has produced and what damage they have done to this country. or Enron. or much corporate corruption that involves your state..
WE ARE FUCKED....Now i have made many good friends who still have faith that we can still fix this with a vote or a politician. WE CAN"T...
So we work for and we feed this Fascism. Not only that we give them informed consent to do as they please to us..Some of you will argue we need to just stick to the constitution and i agree..But what constitution? The UN? So heres my question,
How many of you work for a big corporation and feed the beast and consent to whatever it is they want to do to us???Be Honest, no time for bull shitting yourself anymore..Now what say you?

We're a small service operation Rusty, less than 50 employees. Almost got replaced by one of the global corporations earlier this year. Guess what, 2 days before their start up they realized they could not do the same job we do for the ridiculously low price they quoted. I've been working month to month on the project while the customer rewrites the RFP. We are the exception to the rule.

Hope you guys can hang on Greg

Good post Mr Rusty, except for the cussing:). Like Gregory I to work for a small company but I am contracted by a LARGE Corp. You may know them as Cummins. I have seen them several, several times run year end and put out news letters saying they had a bad year and must start the lay off's. In that same breath start giving the top brass 10's of millions in bonuses. My last calc for the President, Mr Solso was aprox $6000 an hour.

The companies should be owned by the employees. Budwieser sold out to a foreign corporation, when the workers are the ones that should have had the first bite at the apple.
I will pray for your good fortune. . . You have had a hard time, and it just dont seem fair.
Maybe we could get the Rothchilds to help bail you out. They own %75 of the worlds wealth. . .

Oh my, a thread full of socialists? There is nothing wrong with a corporation paying 2 billion dollars to any one person and 2 dollars an hour to the workers.
You are blaming the cart and forgetting all about the horse.
Let's start with the word corporation. What is a corporation? It is primarily a tax structure. Yes, to incorporate and what form of incorporation you choose refers to how the IRS categorizes your liability to them.

Next, to incorporate affords a variety of legal liability options. An incorporated business can go bankrupt and the bosses who bankrupted the business are not legally liable. They walk away. Who wrote up the rules for legal liability? The corporations may have bought politicians, but it is the politicians who did the corrupt deed. They took the bribe and they used their position to execute a favor. Politicians are the hit men.

Small business has a different mindset than corporate America. We do the exact opposite than what Joseph described as Cummins behavior. Through all of this rotten economy we haven't laid off a single productive employee. I have to admit to pruning out some dead wood over the last couple of years but that was unrelated to the economy. Instead, the owner of our company and myself, the ops mgr, salesmen, safety officer, arborist etc. haven't gotten a raise since the spring of 08.

We have not enjoyed the private enterprise capitalism our founders intended for us since 1913. Private enterprise became Progressively more scarce as our government intervened into business.
Who among us hasn't been taught to believe that the Sherman Act was for our protection? Now there's a lie we were taught in school.

Large and wealthy corporations are the government's partners in crime, but they would not be large and wealthy if not for government.
Big government is the root source of all evil.

I appreciate your sentiment Gregory, but not a worker can hit the field if the paperwork isn't in order. Not a worker can hit the field unless a business owner takes the risk and puts everything on the line to get the business going. A worker walks on to the next job when the business goes south. The owner loses everything.

Sue let's start with taxes, while what you posted is mostly true there are exceptions. Lets put some of the overheads in the same pass on to the customer category. There have been a few occaisions where shortly after entering into a multi-year contract, prices rise, taxes go up and fuel has been the most volital variable. It can be up to 5 years before you get a chance to revisit price and adjust for added cost. This scenario may be exclusive to service industries but it exists.

Gregory, the tax liability is then factored into the price. After the fact maybe, but still, taxes are an expense. The same works in reverse though. The job of most corporate finance executives is to apply for extensions. Now there's fancy footwork for the year end books don't you think? You can plug in whatever number you want for the estimated tax liability for an accrual based business, or show no liability at all for a cash based business. Great year for profits right?

No here's the caper. The owner (my boss) has 3 of these franchises. Clinic administrator position has just became available at one. She is taking resumes from within the company. Now on paper the most manager experience is me..Salary, Bonuses. The thought has entered my mind to throw my resume in the pot.I really don't think i can do that...I want to see these people burn in hell..Sorry just my opinion.

1 year 8 months ago

Sue you are correct, but for now we are free to choose to provide for the work force before management and admin. We have not given up the right to choose and are not being coersed into our behavior. We have just as much right to manage our contracts as we do as the corporations who squeeze every nickle out of the bottom line. Profit is important yes, it is the reason any business exists but it is not the only thing.

Rusty, that's the free market. If you can't trust them why work for them at any price? Vote with your feet as Reagan said.

And Joseph i do believe in God.I believe in Jesus Christ. I don't live a life that would glorify him in any way but i do believe..and i know this to very true when applied to today

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

You are not a union shop. In the Chicago area a huge number of the small business are...were...Mom and Pop construction subcontractors. If you want to work in Chicago you are union. If we want contracts, we jump through the hoops. Free from government? It sounds like you live in Camelot.
The compliance paperwork is going through the roof here.

1 year 8 months ago

Greg it sounds so easy..Your little company im sorry to say will eventually fall to the feet of it's master. It's only a matter of time my friend.

Rusty, that was a really nice post, but I'm getting sick and tired of feeling like we have to declare our faith so that Joseph isn't slamming us with insults left and right. He plays the religion card like liberals play the race card and I'm really getting fed up with it. This is not a religious forum. This is a forum for political activism. Joseph is out of line and off topic as usual.

1 year 8 months ago

I stand corrected not free from government except in the area I was speaking. Sue I work on Military bases, the compliance is unreal but has actually created a niche market for me where the competition can not or will not comply. I also agree with your points on government intrusion and partnering with business. Brings us right back around to fidelity to the constitution and founding principles.

Maybe Rusty but we'll fight till the end. We try to be happy warriors.

I am right on topic Sue but as usual the first thing you post is name calling. I for sure don't care about your sad agenda or sick opinion. I really like the Big Gov is the root to all evil thing you try to force on everyone here. People run that big gov and hatemongers like you vote them in. Wake up!

1 year 8 months ago

What name did I call you Joseph? Are you telling lies again, or are you going to get foul mouthed and call me a bimbo again?
What name did I call you Joseph? Where is it?
The rest of your post makes no sense Joseph. I'm a hate monger just for voting for the past 40 years then with exception to my votes for Ron Paul, Ross Perot and hey, who would've thought Reagan would turn the way he did? That was not my fault.

Gregory, if you don't mind, what exactly are those compliance issues that you are willing and able to meet? An example of what we are up against here in Chicago is affirmative action to the extreme. One current contract requires that we have no less than a 50% black work force. Well ya know, we have to get our workforce from the union hall. If the union has a favorite son, guess who gets the available couple of blacks who are in the union? Guess who can't qualify for the contract?

Gregory, why do you call it a "damned" letter about the separation of church and state?
