The Best President...

January 12, 2013

The role of leader should be one of service. The best leaders are those who serve those they lead.

UHHHmmm, well, I agree to a point. A leader should never expect something from someone he/she is not willing to do themselves. A leader is the figure head who provides a way for others to get things done. Either by ideas or by knowledge. Those attributes can come in the form of personal or delegation.
Either way, the leader is responsible, and accepts that responsibility.

Personally, I like these two leadership quotes from Gen. George S Patton, Jr.:

The Founders envisioned prudence as the main virtue of a Public Leader especially for the presidency. They believed in a Prudent government to protect and rule the people.

One thing I learned from 24 years in the military is that the ONLY privilege gained from a position of responsibility is to lead soldiers. They are your best asset and ultimately my inspiration because they never ceased to amaze me. Leadership requires you to know your limitations and the strengths of the led. A cohesive unit knows no limits.

Deonte, ..."They believed in a government to... rule the people."

Nothing could be further from the truth.

They Believed in a prudent government that would not "waste the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them" "But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.

A cherry picked quote from one Founding Father does not a consensus make. You made a general statement and implied agreement among all the Founding Fathers.

They had just declared independence from a despotic ruler. The last thing they wanted was to be "ruled."

Interesting quotes Deonte. But in them you are making broad generalities that do not apply in many cases. I get the feeling you are quoting other people with the idea to give us some insight into leadership. I would much rather hear your own personal insights. Speak from your heart. What do you mean leaders should be more prudent? Why?

Well Silent No more has a point i did "cherry pick" a quote, but I could accuse him of the same thing.

Ideally, humans would not require outside governance, but would demonstrate self-governance. I think this is "The American Dream" - not two cars in every garage and a plasma TV in every room. In such a world there would be little need for governance by external entity since individuals would resolve conflict without theft or physical violence.

Since man is imperfect, some means of conflict resolution is necessary - hence the existence of government, though preferably limited.
