CALL TO ACTION:
Over 70 applications were submitted to the Charter School Advisory Board to add over 25,000 classroom seats and school choice options across North Carolina. Sadly, the Charter School Advisory Board threw out many great applications and choices for North Carolina’s students, parents, and teachers by only approving 11 applications, leaving nearly 22,000 children without a choice. With the waitlist for charters quickly growing over 30,000 students, North Carolinians are desperate for more charter school choices. The actions of the Charter School Advisory Board represent a disturbing trend that needs to be corrected. Join us on June 5th at 9:00am on the Halifax Mall in front of the Department of Public Instruction to let the State Board of Education know that more charter schools are needed and to stop letting great applications fall through the cracks. Let them know that the application fee is unacceptable and cuts out the opportunity for concerned parents, teachers, and community members to start a charter school. Rally with us against the Charter School Advisory Board’s decisions and demand that they support REAL charter school growth!
June 5th, 9am to 10am. Enter the State Board of Education meeting at 10am. LFI committee will report at ~10:20am.
Some key points:
- The Charter School Advisory Board has continually stressed “quality” charter schools, yet there was no definition of quality given, leading to an uneven process in evaluating applications.
- There has seemed to be a crusade against EMOs (management organizations) and a “liberal” bias that for profit companies shouldn’t run charter schools. NHA and Charter Schools USA were nearly shut out. Only 1 NHA school was granted permission to open a charter school, the only EMO approved.
