100 Million Patriots Standing

Protecting Your Privacy on the Internet.

January 17, 2013

Recently, I've been made aware that many of FC have changed their names and/or account settings in an effort to protect their privacy and identity. I hope I can help with some clarity on this matter.
I've been using the internet since DOS (early 80's) as an active part of my career since the World Wide Web originated for the use of libraries and our Military as a private source of sharing information. DOS was a code language used to create and transfer data information. Until Bill Gates marketed an Operating System easy enough for anyone to use, the WWW turned into what is called the Internet today.

Every computer has it's own id, called an "IP address" that identifies your computer.

It used to be required to issue a subpoena before any government agency could access data from any web address, but now they can have access to the data info through whatever Internet Service Provider (ISP) without having any probable cause or warrant.

In doing so, agencies target web sites, then filter through data that includes our IP Address identity which pinpoints your name and address listed on your Internet Provider Service.
So no matter where you are on the internet, there is NO possible way, what you say or who you are, is privately protected, changing your name trying to hide your identity or your account settings has NO EFFECT at all, except causing you and others some inconveniences and confusion.
The "privacy" issue no matter what website/search engine you use, is nothing but a joke. At best, privacy policies really only matter to protect your email accounts from being share or sold.
So what I explained here, I'm sure is nothing compared to what can be easily done in today's technology, such as downloading and analyzing data on a daily basis.
Hope this helps.

The hackers are waisting their ttime.

Most people with a PC have been hacked....I was a few years ago two or three times....takes a lot of effort to get things back in order....saved five years for a Mac....no viruses or hacking. Runs like a top every day. Finally!

Someone gets into a computer and sends emails to all of your addressees. My entire church received lots of porno stuff with my name on it as if it came from me. Whew.....what a mess!

Sorry to learn this, CN.

I call that a malicious worm, not a hack. Everybody can get them from sites or email you'd never suspect as harmful. Some you can get rid of easily by creating a new restore point on your computer but many replicate.

Good you're here, Deb!

All I know is, the tech guy who fixed it called it hacking. They get into your computer and can do many things, including getting into your files, etc.

This is important.
Just because FC can record of your IP does not mean it is going to or even more important share it. Every net user should be concerned about the security of the websites they use, their ISP and their browser.

Don't use Google for searching stuff, they spy on you
here is a list I hope you all implement

Unfortunately, some of the advice above is rather misguided.

Changing the windows name of your PC won't matter - that information isn't transmitted past your local network and isn't a useful unique identifier anyway. Additionally, changing your MAC address does nothing either. Your MAC address is only used to talk to other machines on the local network.

Are you saying any ISP can not check your MAC Address and when you send information upstream the ISP? Is the ISP not aware of the MAC address of your router and tracks it, or records it? I am not sure what Internet company you are employed by, but if it is not an ISP it is irrelevant.

When I refereed to changing your computer name, obviously I was talking about your computes name on the network NOT your windows name......

Amendment to above post.
Just encase a user is ignorant of what a MAC address is. MAC stands for Media Access Control. Every outlet on a network has a unique MAC address. Thin of MAC address as a physical address while and IP is an internet address.

I think we got a bit carried away. Point is, no matter what you think you're doing to avoid your identity and information being snatched, it is anyways.
As for myself, I don't do anything out of my way to avoid it because it's beyond my control. The only thing you can do to avoid it is unplug and don't use your computer. PERIOD.
We need to know this and relax. There is nothing I say or do on the internet that I wouldn't stand up and defend my right to free speech.

Agree.

Deb your cyber smarts are greatly appreciated. There are somethings that get put on the internet against your will whether you have a computer or not.

As long as you know, that's what counts!

My friend is letting his link die down....the real name was mentioned last in August...like I said...sir troll alot only has a few followers and was only on FC for a few weeks before he was kicked off....

Hopefully the reality of not having a paying job will wake those trolls up..and I have a feeling after Mommie gets tired of supporting her Ivy league douche bag while he plays Call of Duty (which I love BTW) 24-7 and kicks his butt out of her basement and makes him get a job.....

As my grandmother use to tell us ..Revenge is sweet.....one day soon most of the country will wake up and realize conservatism is the only way to save this country...or there won't be a country...

Very insightful, Cookie.....I like that name too......liberals go by show and emotion, not by common sense and what is right. We can only hope that at least some of them will wake up and smell the right side of things.
