Can Anybody Tell Me About HAM Radios?

February 25, 2013

I know nothing of this, but I think a logical move would be the purchase of a HAM radio. Anybody know anything about them? Brand, price?

go to ARRL.com. I am a HAM operator with general designation which means I can get on the HF (high freq) channels after passing exams and getting license. You start off as a novice or technician license on 2m (meter) radio with is approx 30 mi range with bouncing off a repeater station. Ask fire department or emergency management in your area. they will know who the HAMs are in your area and you can hook up with them for the classes and the Elmer mentor for passing the test.

Thanks Sandra, lots of great info. I had no idea you had to get a license. It seems kinda lousy you have to. I copied and pasted your info, muchas gracias.

Joe, I would love to get HAM radio. This seems like a great idea. ..is this something that is not currently monitored by big brother?

Bravo, Ms. Sandra, for your sage and comprehensive advice.

As it happens, many Second Amendment groups are strident in their urging for all members to hold a HAM operator's license. My wife and I are just getting started, hoping eventually to win a rating which will allow us to coordinate efforts with other groups.

The only problem with any form of electronic communications we have is it can be monitored, located, and or blocked.

1 year 7 months ago

actually there are ways to get around. as long as you have battery power (solar charged) can string a wire you can communicate. to find you would require triangulation of the signal. you operate from any place. IF SHTF license won't matter, we'll all be criminals anyway--so what will you have to lose then? LISTENing is key in these times. Secret codes are forbidden. Morse code is not required but would be advisable to learn how.

I am getting into CB right now for local communications. . .

set up a communications tree and protocol--what happens if this or if that, then do this or that, go here or there, and it goes without saying, listen to some of the old WWII movies and listen to the radio communications and get the idea of what to do. Underground railroad type set up--keep your friends close but your enemies closer also goes without saying. Many are admitting to the need to form their homeland militias and get some field experience and training as a group.

Sandra, That's interesting. I built a solar generator for my refrigerator last year (very easy BTW). It's only there for power outages. I think it would work well for a HAM application.
Gale, I believe you can foil intrusion with HAM, Sandra has alluded to above, which you probably already read, but I did want to respond to your post.

if you go out and buy a Good antenna mount it high in a tree. buy some good quality coax cable, run it from the tree tot the house and get a Good CB radio Cobra 29 ltd is a good radio low cost.. also buy a car battery and a battery charger (keeps car battery charged). YOU DON'T NEED A LIC. TO USE A CB... and you can talk to a Hamm Radio but will Not talk as far out as a Hamm can..

I can see that Sandra and Earl are light-years ahead of me in radio preparations. I thank you profusely for the benefit of your expertise! While my wife and I continue our HAM radio study, I shall seek a CB transceiver for my '91 Geo. As you may know, Janet-the-Cow Napolitano has treated many of us to V.I.P.R. blockades on Interstates 40 and 95 in the past year, as an unconstitutional extension of her tyrannical DHS.

Go to the nearest truck stop and buy every thing you need to run a cb... however if you put the Antenna high in a tree you may want to go to Radio shack to buy the coax cable.

Thinking I'd get my toes wet before jumping in the HAM pool I went with the CB radio deal. I spent a about $300.00 yesterday (at Radio Shack) got a Cobra Bluetooth CB, inverter, whip antenna and 50' of coax. I dialed in the tuner, heard one trucker singing some made up song, and then zip the rest of the day (on any channel). Today I took the antenna down, re-packaged everything and took it back to Radio Shack (thank Buddha they didn't charge me the 15% restock fee).

Well Joe if you kept the CB i woulda talked with you when passing thru... however you do hear alot of stupidity on the trucker channel... but if you decide to try again put the radio on channel 9 you wouldn't hear much but the police monitor channel 9.. so if someone was calling for help it would be heard on 9..

1 year 7 months ago

Good morning, Earl and Joe! Copy the advice for Channel 9, and thanks. Our nearest I-65 truck stop is a franchise about 40 miles south, so will try Amazon and Radio Shack on the Internet first. I for one hope that the "Break - 9" traffic will give early warning about V.I.P.R. blockades. Since I am a retired anesthesiologist, perhaps they will allow me a "handle" of "Sandman" or "Gas-Passer".

should a kept that cb--there are times that it is alive. But then you mainly need it to hear the truckers talk back n forth. And believe me when something don't smell right they know it and talk about it. So could be your early warning of what's coming down the road or flyin in the skies. get a cheapie at Radio shack or on ebay.

Most of the truckers today have also 2m radios (HAM) and some HFs. But they also still have cbs. can never have too many ways to communicate--even smoke signals if the SHTF might come in handy.

My suggestion is to find a good Radio Shack (hard to do), that will sell you a quality trunking scanner and Program it for your local area police, fire and airport towers. This provides very interesting information about what is going on, though Police now use cell phones to stay off monitored radios, its better than nothing.

That's right Richard.. when the shtf ain't nobody coming after you for not having a Lic.. however if you have a family or friend that installs or repairs dish or direct TV dishes and equip. you can get them to Tap your CB or Ham's to that dish and modify the sending and receiving unit to dispatch your signal via Dish sat network!

1 year 7 months ago

You know Walkie Talkies are a much cheaper way to go. You can get chips to go to them to replace the ones they have which will transmitt furher and no FFA involement.

1 year 7 months ago

Great idea Earl, I put my own dish into the back bedroom 200 miles from the main house, and have two extra dish's to further expand :-)

1 year 7 months ago

so when you tap into the dish what freq are you tuning in or can it tune to diff ones? is the dish being used for anything else other than as a derelict dish--no tv reception?? Interested in knowing what kind of reception you get.

I'm no expert, but seeing that a dish is simply an antenna, it seems logical that it could be modified to send or receive, with modifications required, much like people use tin soup cans in place of the lnb to get wireless computer signals from sources a mile or so away instead of a 20-40 feet that would be normal with a wireless router. Its not rocket science to re-purpose a tv dish into another type of antenna, and google can help with details on how to do it.

1 year 7 months ago

well, i think there is more to it than being that simple. Amateur radios can be blown or fried if the SWR of the antenna signal is not right and one tries to transmit. so this might be a good project to look into. SHTF might find a lot of bandoned equipment around.

1 year 7 months ago

I don't know the details of HOW but i've seen it done.. the dish turns the cb into a satellite radio the receiver makes the cb a Base station to send and receive. They do make hand held Cb's and walkie talkies can talk to CB too but you don't get very far out.
